The mushroom aisle, graded

We Lined Up 6 Kinds of Mushroom Supplements and Graded Every One

Capsules, powders, coffees, gummies, ten-in-one complexes. They all say mushroom on the front, and they are not all the same thing inside. Here is the checklist we use, what passes, what to put back on the shelf, and how each kind of product scored.

By the Hippie Farms family. We make one of the products on this list, and we graded it with the same checklist as everything else. We grade kinds of products, never other brands. The reviews on this page are real. · October 2026
A kitchen table lineup of coffee, gummies, mushroom powder, oats, fresh mushrooms and a bottle of 5 Mushrooms Reserve Blend beside a checklist
How we graded them
  • What part of the mushroom is in it: the mushroom itself, or the roots grown on grain.
  • Whether you can see how much of each mushroom you get, in milligrams.
  • Whether anyone counted the mushroom's own compounds, and showed the report.
  • What else rides along: grain, coffee, sugar, or a long list of names with tiny amounts.

Short on time? Here's where we landed.

The one that passed every line on our checklist is the one we make: 5 Mushrooms Reserve Blend. Four fruiting-body extracts plus chaga sclerotia, every dose printed, and independently lab-tested at 1,250 mg of beta-glucans per serving. Yes, we're biased. That's why the checklist is right below, so you can run it on ours and on anything else in your cart.

The checklist: what to look for, what to put back

Must-haves

  • The mushroom itself (the fruiting body), named on the label
  • Extracts, so the mushroom's compounds are pulled out
  • Every mushroom's dose printed in milligrams
  • Beta-glucans counted in milligrams per serving by an independent lab
  • A public report with the lab, the lot and the date on it
  • A low starch reading, which is how you know there's no grain in it
  • Third-party tested every batch
  • Organic marked on each mushroom's own line of the panel

Red flags

  • Mycelium or "myceliated" with oats, brown rice or another grain on the mushroom line
  • One blend total with no amount for each mushroom
  • "Equivalent" math, like a huge milligram number for a small capsule
  • Beta-glucans as a percent or the word "verified", with no milligrams per serving
  • A certificate that only covers purity, passed off as proof of strength
  • Mushrooms listed after coffee, sugar or flavorings
  • Ten or more species squeezed into one small serving

Our pick (and yes, we make it)

1Fruiting-body extract blends with every dose printed

GRADEA+

Passes every line on the checklist. We'd hope so. We built it to.

A bottle of 5 Mushrooms Reserve Blend behind lion's mane, reishi, turkey tail, chaga and cordyceps on a linen cloth

This is the kind of product the checklist is written around. In ours, four of the five mushrooms are extracts of the fruiting body, the part you'd recognize as a mushroom, and chaga is an extract of its sclerotia, the dense dark growth chaga actually makes. No mycelium, no grain. Reishi is dual-extracted to draw out the full range of its compounds.

Every amount is on the panel: 2,100 mg of organic mushroom extracts in three capsules, set by our Naturopathic Doctor. Then we had an independent lab count the mushroom itself. Our first extract lot was independently lab-tested at 1,250 mg of beta-glucans per serving, and the same test read the starch at about 7%, which is what a capsule with no grain in it looks like.

We checked more than 40 mushroom supplements in October 2026, and the next best was about half. Mushrooms are a crop, so that number belongs to that lot, and we'll post the next lot's result when it's tested.

Good, with a catch

2Single-mushroom fruiting-body extracts

GRADEB

Often the real thing. One mushroom still only does one job.

A woman at a kitchen counter holds a fresh lion's mane mushroom beside a dish of mushroom powder

A lion's mane capsule or a reishi capsule made from a fruiting-body extract can be a good product. The ones that print a beta-glucan figure in milligrams are a step ahead of most of the aisle.

Two catches. First, many say "beta-glucans verified" or give a percent, which tells you less than milligrams per serving does, because a percent depends on what you divide by. Second, it's one mushroom for one job. In the products we checked, the single-mushroom bottles commonly landed around 200 to 300 mg of beta-glucans a serving.

Buying tip: look for milligrams per serving and a named lab, then ask whether one mushroom covers what you want, or whether you'd need two or three bottles to get there.

Great coffee, count the mushroom elsewhere

3Mushroom coffee

GRADEC

We love coffee. The mushroom is usually the smallest part of the cup.

A man pours coffee from a French press into a white mug in an early morning kitchen

Mushroom coffee is a real ritual for a lot of people, and we get it. Here's the label trick worth knowing: a blend has to list its ingredients in order of weight. When coffee, collagen, flavorings or other add-ins come before the mushrooms, the mushrooms are the smaller share of that scoop.

Here's how that plays out. Our 3 capsules carry 5 scoops' worth of the mushroom in a leading mushroom coffee. That's 5x the mushroom of a leading mushroom coffee, with no taste, no frother and no sludge at the bottom of the mug. Count the mushroom's own compounds and it's about 3x the beta-glucans a leading mushroom coffee could even hold. And if a mushroom coffee ever felt like something in ten minutes, that was the caffeine.

Our take: don't swap your coffee for mushroom coffee. Have the coffee you already love, for the coffee, and take your mushrooms with it, in an amount you can actually read.

Lots of names, little of each

4"10-in-1" mushroom complexes

GRADEC-

An impressive front label. A small, split-up serving behind it.

A woman at her kitchen table squints skeptically at a product listing on her phone

These are the bottles with ten or more mushrooms on the front and a giant milligram number, often an "equivalent" figure that describes how much raw mushroom the maker says it started from, rather than what's in your capsule.

Flip it over and you'll often find one blend total shared by every species, with no amount for each one, and a lot of these are mycelium grown on oats or rice. One blend total split ten ways leaves very little room for any one mushroom.

Buying tip: divide the blend total by the number of mushrooms. If no amount is printed for each one, you can't know what you're getting.

Tasty, and mostly gummy

5Mushroom gummies

GRADEC-

Easy to take. The gummy base leaves little room for mushroom.

A child and an adult reach into a jar of sugar coated gummies

Gummies are easy, and easy matters. The catch is physics: a gummy has to be mostly gummy to hold its shape, which means sweetener, syrup and a gelling base take up most of each piece, and the mushroom gets what's left.

Look at where the mushroom lands on the label, and whether it gets a milligram amount at all. If sugar or syrup comes first, you're mostly buying candy with a mushroom drawn on the jar.

Buying tip: if capsules are the hard part for you, any capsule can be opened and stirred into a smoothie, yogurt or applesauce.

Put this one back

6Mycelium on grain

GRADED

Mostly grain, sold under a mushroom's name.

A farmer points from a jar of grain laced with white mycelium to a fresh reishi mushroom

Mycelium is the web of fine white threads a mushroom grows from, its root network. A lot of mushroom products grow that mycelium on oats or brown rice, then grind the whole tray, grain and all, and call the powder by the mushroom's name.

The grain shows up when you test for starch. A 2025 study of chaga products found the fermented-grain ones ran 33 to 68% alpha-glucan, the starch kind. Our finished capsules read about 7% on the same kind of starch test.

Buying tip: read the mushroom line itself. If it says mycelium, myceliated, or names a grain like oats or brown rice, most of what you're swallowing is the grain.

Questions people ask

Is it fair for you to grade your own product?

Fair question. We graded kinds of products, never other brands, and we put the checklist first so you can check our work. Every line we gave ourselves credit for is on the label or in the public lab report. Run it on anything in your cart, ours included.

What's a beta-glucan, and why does it matter?

It's the mushroom's own compound, the fiber that makes a mushroom a mushroom and the part your immune cells recognize. A normal label weighs the powder. Counting beta-glucans tells you how much actual mushroom made it into the capsule instead of grain or starch.

Why milligrams instead of a percent?

Milligrams per serving is what you actually swallow. A percent depends on what you divide by. Ours is 1,250 mg of beta-glucans in three capsules, from the independent test on our first extract lot.

Is every bottle 1,250 mg?

That's the independent lab's result on our first extract lot. Mushrooms are a crop, so every lot is a little different, which is why we call it a test result and not a promise for every bottle. When the next lot is tested, we'll post what comes back.

Your panel lists rice hulls. Isn't that grain?

Read the mushroom lines. Organic rice hulls are the husk that keeps the powder flowing smoothly through the capsule machine. Nothing was grown on them, and the starch reading on the finished capsules came back at about 7%.

Can I take it with my coffee?

Please do. There's no caffeine in it, so it sits right beside your morning cup. Three capsules a day, ideally with a meal. Breakfast is the easy habit.

I take a prescription. Can I take this?

Our formulas are generally well tolerated, and plenty of folks in the Groovy Commune take 5 Mushrooms alongside their prescriptions. We always recommend checking with a doctor or pharmacist before starting ours or any dietary supplement. We're happy to send the full ingredient list so you can bring it along.
